Default Should I rebuild the old motor or go with a crate Motor?

Im trying to figure out what i need to do with my 96 cobra. It had a blown headgasket with over 124,000 miles on it so i yanked the motor and decided to totaly rebuild it. I was wondering which would be the easiest and cheapest way to go. Obviously the easiest way to go would be a crate motor. But I dont know which company to go with and crate motors are expensive. I do want one with around 500hp or one that will handle a supercharger later down the road. I can rebuild the motor myself but all the parts i would need to make a bulletproof bottom end and all the other parts and mods i want for it would cost a lot. Im leanin towards a crate motor but dont know what companies are all out there. Ford Racing has some but they say they fit the "Edge" mustangs. Seems like the 1996-1998 modular powered stangs are left out? Any help in this area would be great! Thanks a lot!

you can use the "edge" motors as you talked about in your car, they fit right in and will give you better power unless you want to stick with the B head/intake setup.

the blocks in the 96-98 cobras can handle up to 1000hp with forged internals.

Wonder why they say they fit 2003-2004 cobras? They do use the 03-04 heads and timing cover and a few other parts from those yrs. Yea i've been doin research and the newer heads from the 03-04's perform better so thats definately a must for me. Do you know any other crate motor companies? I've looked at ford racing and shawn hyland so far.

(to the teksid)^ ive seen a little more twice and yes 96-98 are sn-95 New edges even tho most refer to 99-04 as new edge the 96s-98s are still included just make sure u don't go and put a 2v in your cobra

So sn95 platform is from 94-04? Yea im stickin to the 4v. I know im gonna be spendin lots of money but dont know if its cheaper to just rebuild or go with a crate motor. I havnt figured out my list of individual parts i need because it sounds like since i got it all torn down might as well update the bottom end with better parts and better rods and stuff.

how about the ford replacement $4200 and a 3 year warranty un limited miles
Also has updated bearings. Unless you want more than what it was.

Well i want more highperformance. I eventually would like to supercharge it. I've been researching what Sean Hyland has. Hes got some rotating assemblies that look great. I need to figure out how much its gonna cost me for all the parts to rebuild the motor myself and compare that to a long block or complete motor.

Honestly I'd buy forged rods/pistons and you have a good shortblock right there, next spend the money you saved without buying a crate motor and supercharge or do some other work to your car.
