I'm actually looking into getting a 96-98 cobra 5 spd. soon and so far my plan is to add a t70 turbo, tubular k-member, coilover conversion, centerforce clutch and of course the supporting mods for the turbo. My question is what gears should I get to replace the 3.27's? With turbo do I need numerically higher gears to help with low end turbo lag since the engine is already weak in the low range or will the engine respond well and allow for 3.73's.
Considering the following gears: 4.10, 3.73, 3.55 or 3.90
kinda depends on your horsepower and setup most turbo cars run 3.55's
Why are alot of people on here going with 3.73 and 4.10? I'm a little confused. Does the turbo require less gear? By the way the car will be raced at the 1/8 mile track and also a daily driver.
most people on here are running N/A setups and yes a turbo/blower can generally use less gear. im not familiar with an 1/8 setup so the 3.55 maybe wrong :S
you could go lower on a eighth mile track but if you do freeway driving you gas mileage will suck. another big thing will be based on how much hp u plan on running like psicho mentioned.
with a turbo car you dont need that low of a gear cause you have the turbo kicking in at certain rpm (and when it kicks in hang on!!). so if your turbo is spooling at 3400 rpm and you redline at 6000 rpms your not gonna get that much from the turbo cause your gonna be shifting so fast. so if you go with a 3.27 gear you will get more out of each gear and be able to get more from the turbo.
