Question 96 cobra tranny swap

I have a 96 Cobra that needed 2nd and 4th gears synchros replaced so I just bought a lightly used T-45 out of a 98 GT to replace it with. I was told this was a direct swap and both cars used the same transmission. I took it to have it put in today and the mechanic said the existing trans tailshaft is 4 inches longer than the GT replacement. Can I just have him change over the tailshaft and bolt it in or did I buy the wrong transmission ? Help ! I was told this was an easy swap !

I am real sure that they are the same transmission..... Unless someone did a T56 swap in that GT..... You sure that it's a 5 speed and not a 6 speed that you got? I found some driveshafts on the internet and they are saying that it fits 96-04 GT and Cobra.....

But I can use the existing tailshaft on the GT one right with no problems it looks like it would bolt right in place. I can fix the speedo I 'm not worried about that thanks for your help

Swap the the Cobra t-45 tailshaft housing into the GT T45. The only thing that is different on a GT and a Cobra T45 is the tailshaft housing. And the transmission is not longer it is where the Transmission cross member bolts to the car that is different. stand over the 2 transmissions and look down at the mounting point and you will see what I'm talking about

Yeah, that would explain why I found the driveshaft's that fit the GT and cobra. Odd that the mechanic would say that it's longer.
