Default Best aftermarket shifter for the money?

Just checking to see what some of your opinions are. I've been looking on American Muscle and there are several. Hurst is a well known brand and I have heard of stead.

I have a 1996 Cobra. What would the shifter cost?

Hey Rob - I'd have to side with Tim on this. Steeda makes a fantastic unit and having rowed them extensively along side of some of the other big names I think I felt most connected with theirs. Not overly notchy, Didn't hesitate running it hard (You'd usually expect a 2nd-3rd grind) but it was like butter for lack of a better term.

Check out some reviews below on their setup as well and don't hesitate to let either of us know if you're to have any other questions.

Alex

I've had a Steeda for years, been very happy with it and it is not only a vast improvement in daily driving and aggressive driving over the stock POS but it is universally well regarded in the Mustang community.

That said, it all comes down to personal preference and experience, and literally anything is an improvement over the stock unit. Most people seem to be happy with the "el cheapo" SR unit that AM sells. The one that people who have used multiple shifters over the years will say is the absolute best of the bunch is MGW. Gonna pay a little extra for that one though.

Again, I recommend the Steeda, but you absolutely cannot go wrong with any of the other well known names - Pro5.0, Hurst, etc.

I like my MGW in the 99. I have never tried the others though, so I'm guessing they're better than stock.

Other than the feel, another improvement with the short throw shifter is being able to put a drink in the cup holder without smashing it out with a second or fourth gear change. The 96 center console area may be a little different though.
