Tire Profile & Cornering Versus Ride

A lot of guys don't care about ride on a Mustang they love..... & I get that, & don't want to offend them or start an argument, period! I'M ONLY MENTIONING THE SUBJECT TO INFORM BUYERS THAT THE HAVE A CHOICE AS TO WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT.... CORNERING OR RIDE! IT'S YOUR CHOICE!

I will just mention to those buying a new Mustang that want the best ride possible should think about the "profile" of the tire before buying... or after! I love my 2016 GT, but I'd love it even more with a better ride! Low profile tires negatively affect ride! If you don't mind that.... great! My point is that the more tire between the rim & the road, the better the ride! Yes, you loose some handling in cornering because there is more movement in the side wall of the tire. If cornering is a big issue, go low profile, but if you want the best ride possible & don't push the corners too hard a higher profile will give you a noticeably better ride because there is more tire to flex & absorb the bumps & to roll over in hard turns. I live in an area with some rough roads here & there, so I want a softer ride to absorb bumps! The standard GT 235/50/18 tire rides better than a 235/40R/19 tire that comes with 19" wheels. I would like to have gotten my GT with 245/60/18 tires because I like as good a ride as I can get with a Mustang GT. It's all a matter of whether ride or maximum cornering is most important to you!

It doesn't look so bad with 235/50R/18 tires! I wish the tires were 60R, but that's just me! I likes me a fast, but sm000oooth ride!

On the roads(very Rough) around me, I have to have some decent sidwall height therwise I would Be wheel rash city

But 245/60R18 is too big to fit a Mustang, isn't it?
Even the base model with 17" comes with 235/55R17.
So the overall size of a 245/60 tire is way too big.

Honestly, I don't know if it will fit, but I think it should. Here's my GT with the 235/50R18 tires. Since the 18" wheel is a 1/2" less in height off the ground the only difference would be a 10% increase in the thickness of the wall of the tire! The radius of the tires above should tell the distance from tire to the body: The radius 13.63" will increase to 14.55.", or only 0.92 of an inch. It seems that is not very much difference, but the difference in ride would be substantial. I went down in the radius on My Toyota Sienna & it rides much better now!

Of course I have given up the chance to race my wife's Toyota Sienna at the track with that change!

Well, I know it's recommended to stay within 3% of the diameter/height of the original tire.

My original point was that if a person wants "ride quality" more than "cornering ability" the Mustang Standard 235/50R/18 is a better way to go. For my needs the Mustang could ride better than it does, but corners better than I need, so I went with the Base Tire & Wheel for less money! It is noticeable in the ride quality.... but many young guys don't care. They like the 19 & 20" skinny tire look!

Going from the 235/50R/18 to the 235/55/18 is an increase of 3.4% or 2 miles per hour faster at 60. I suspect that more than that the computer should be reflashed to correct the odometer & speedo. I assume Mustangs are programmed for the difference between the 18 & 19" wheel choices available from the factory. I think a lot of hand held programmers allow you to do that yourself. My Toyota Sienna has tires that are larger diameter to improve the ride which makes the speedo slightly slower than the actual speed, but it hasn't caused any problem. It rides much better!

low profile tires dont mean better handling just like a larger sideway doesnt mean better ride quality.

That car has got to act a fool with those 235's. I just want to move when fuel is applied, 305's are still not enough. A supercharger on that wheel/tire setup would be unusable at almost any speed.

I am not a "young" guy but I don't like skinny tall tires on anything except maybe a tractor.

The dealership can fix your speedo for any size tire you put on the car, no problem.

The standard 235/50R/18 tires seem to do just fine with 435 HP. Now with the supercharger's 670 HP they will obviously break lose more if I hammer it! I usually apply full power only after I'm rolling so that may not be a problem. At 670 HP, I may have to watch it when passing gear kicks in! If I need more tire, I'll buy them! Time will tell!
