I have two theories:

1) Ford might be done with the GT500 for a bit. The horsepower wars can go on forever. no one can win. 580 HP ZL1 -> 662 HP GT500 -> 707 HP Hellcat. it'll never end. I think that Ford may be going less towards a brute of a HP monster and more to a fine tuned track machine. MAYBE. This might explain the GT350 Ford just unveiled. This may be an attempt to match up to the new Z/28. OR i could be wrong because..........

2) I think i recall seeing something that said something to the effect of a "Boosted 5.0". IDK. The GT350 may just be a limited time specialty like the Boss was a from 2012-2013 and Ford just hasnt wanted to say much about the next "GT500"

never can tell

I'm not sure there will be a S550 GT500. One of the design concerns that Ford is adhering to is sufficient "air space" between the hood and the top of the engine for the sake of meeting Euro pedestrian crash safety standards.

Since the S197 GT500 used the 5.4L Condor and the 5.8L Trinity engines, those could not fit under the S550 hood with the necessary "air space" from the hood to the supercharger to meed Euro requirements.

If Ford brings back a GT500, I am guessing that the 5.8L will return with tuning to push it into the 700BHP mark to compete with the Dodge Hellcat engine and whatever Chevy will throw out in their top model 6th Gen Camaros.
This Trinity powered S550 would probably only be sold in countries that do not have requirements for "air space" between the hood and the top of the engine.

OR Ford could sit back and let Dodge have their day with the Hellcat and not step back in until Chevy introduces a top trim 6th Gen Camaro (6th Gen ZL1?).

Ford made an official announcement a while back saying there will not be a s550 GT500 moniker.

I vaguely remember this, but I thought it was just online blog rumors.
But I could be wrong and FoMoCo's media personnel could have made the announcement directly and I just missed it.

Well, if Ford decides to produce a supercharged S550 trim model analogous to the outgoing S197 GT500, I am guessing that Ford will resurrect the Cobra name.
