Default What do you think about the weight of the 2015 Mustang?

Do you think that the 2015 Ford Mustang will actually be 200-300lbs heavier?

Yes, I do. It's really sad how me make cars heavier and heavier with added safety features, but yet we do nothing about the real problem, which is bad drivers.

The fed wants cars to get better gas mileage and weight plays a key role in mpg.

WHat do I think?

I think we need to wait for confirmation of the real specs. Even the final HP ratings haven't been revealed yet.

Ford will probably rate it at 450, I bet it makes 420 at the wheels.

i too am in the camp of we just need to wait for the official Ford numbers. And since when have manufacturers rated their HP at the wheels? You want to compare apples to apples on that, you need to compare the same type of numbers.

moosestang what's the best balance between making cars safer and getting a better mileage? I am wondering if withing 50 years all performance cars will be EVs? Corvette C8 may be hybrid.

I guess it depends on the person. as you can see from my sig, I'm not afraid to go without a full roll cage and air bags all around. big brother wants to make sure nobody dies, but you are all going to die some time. I don't understand why we need harsher crush standards for roofs? For the off chance that some idiots rolls their car 20 times?

I would not want to try and design a light weight performance car in the US. We have too many stupid federal regulations for cars, with more on the way.

I personally would like to buy a high performance 3 wheeled car like the scorpion p6, but something with a roof for when it rains. I'd love to see an ariel atom type car sold in the us, but it's impossible to build such a car here. Put 3 wheels on it and it gets classified as a motorcycle and you can get around all the federal BS.

Still not 4685lbs. which makes me happy

Weight is not a bad thing, for a sedan it makes it feel solid, like a tank.

For something like a coupe.. not so cool!

Yes, I believe the S550 could be 200 lbf lighter, but NOT the S550 V6 or S550 GT. No way. There is just so much more heavy hardware for the S550 GT to be lighter than the S197 GT.
MM&FF interviewed Ford engineers and the engineers said nothing about the curb weight. With the knowledge that the chassis is wider and IRS equipment is heavier, MM&FF guessed that there will be NO weight savings. I too am now of that assumption because the S550 does not employ exotic materials like CF nor do the mass produced parts employ machining to mill off unnecessary weight from the heavy components. Too many milling production steps would make the S550 too expensive.

If any S550 trims would be lighter than the lightest 2013-2014 S197 V6, it would only be the 4-banger S550 trim with no packages of any type (definitely no Premium package) and absolutely no options.

I hope FoMoCo's rebuttal is an indication that the S550 GT will be no heavier than the S197 GT of equal packaging/sub-trimming.
But if Ford only rebbutted that the S550 is not 300 lbf heavier, that can be taken so many ways. The S550 of equal trim to an S197 could be 299 lbf heavier, but because of only 1 measly pound, they could cut that hair and object vehemently at such a miniscule technicality.

Do you have a link to Ford's rebuttal to Steeda's claim? I'm not doubting you; I just want to see exactly what Ford said to dispel any word twisting that I could be assuming.

which is good. I was expecting maybe 100-150 lbs, so kudos to Ford for keeping the weight gain as small as it is.

I am just saddened as a whole that cars keep getting heavier. I had a 90's Peugeot saloon that weighed about as much as a new yaris... Sure, safety adds weight, but it still raises eyebrows. I sure as hell wouldn't be able to fit in a yaris what I could in that Peugeot 405...

More weight just means that you need that much more power, brake and tire to get the same performance.

incorrect. "Curb weight" is a very specific term. It's the weight of the vehicle with all fluids, all consumables, a full tank of fuel, but no passengers or cargo. What you're referring to would be "dry weight."
