Default Calling B.S. on a LEO's claim of 218mph

Okay guys. I called B.S. yesterday. I know a guy that's a tribal cop - tribal being Choctaw Nation - here in Oklahoma. He SWEARS his LEO cruiser, a Dodge Charger w/a 5.7 Hemi and no governor, hit 218 on a test run at a closed strip of road near here where the LEO's go to test their cars. I actually said, For crying out loud, did you look at the KPH instead of MPH numbers?

I'm thinking that's a crazy claim - its a CHARGER... granted he didn't tell me what, if any special things are done under the hood, but still - I know there are high performance Vettes and other super cars that can attain that speed, but look at how they're designed vs. the body design of a Charger. With a huge bumper pusher/guard hanging off the front end of it.

Can anyone add to this? Anyone know what sort of package Dodge equips a police cruiser with, as in, the Dodge counterpart of say, a Ford Interceptor?

X2. You'd need a ton of HP to make a big car go that fast. This is probably better suited for the bench racing section.

I've never actually raced but according to my dyno numbers. I should run 8s on street tires.

I knew I could count on you, BB, to tell me what's up on this. He was serious as could be, but I still called it. Decided it best to not argue with him though, it was one of those situations where arguing with him would have been like handling a fresh turd - the more I messed with it, the more I'd have gotten on me. LOL

The whole weight issue and the overall design of the car is what really made it outlandish.

When a VW GTi is pushing more whp than an R/T charger jsut to make 208 in the standing mile....yea he's full of ****.
200+ Is where people BUILD their 1,000+ whp cars to get to or spend ALOT of money on a production car.

true. my tuner has a GT500 with $30K put into the car on top of the sticker price. Whipple 3.4L and many other add ons. His standing 1/4 mile is 205MPH. He actually has certified plaques and whatnot to display this so it is obviously not an easy thing to do. Tell that cop he is full of **** unless he has about $70-80K invested in that car.

I don't think it'd matter if he had 1000rwhp. The simple shape of a car has to be designed to go that fast. Drag coefficients would own his ass. 218mph is a ton.

Exactly what I was thinking. Its roughly shaped like a brick - not too aerodynamic at high speeds.

The Charger Police cruisers are slow, and I mean slow like 16 seconds slow when equipped with light bar, push bar, cage, tactical gear, papers, electronic equipment, etc. They can do 145 mph, but from what I've been hearing, the car is very unstable and nerve racking at those speeds when equipped as a cruiser. Everyone thinks the police version of any car has performance mods, but usually if they have anything, its stiffer shocks to handle the extra weight, and a tune. That cop is completely full of BS. You called it right Ghost. Even if that cruiser was stripped of all the police equipment, and everything else you could rip out of it, it still wouldn't come anywhere close to 218 mph. An SRT-8 Charger won't even come close to that, maybe 175-180 mph across a salt flat. 218 mph is supercar territory.

*nods* Yeahhhh, I can imagine the handling goes to crap at 130+ on those. Know a state trooper that's a huge GM man, and they gave him a Camaro as a cruiser once - they had get rid of the light bar and go to wig wags in the grill because it would screw with the handling at high speeds - and those were the low profile light bars, not the big honkin' county mounty looking light bar the Charger had on it. I did get backed yesterday by another car show buddy - he's got a Corvette and has had his up to 195 and claimed it was still pulling (which I don't doubt) but was skeptical that a Charger could get past the 140 mark.

I DID ask him to pull it over and pop the hood, show us what was under there - the tribal guys were working security at the show yesterday - and he suddenly found something else he needed to be doing.

I kept wanting to say: PIX or I call B.S.!

WTF? Who runs cars to 200mph? Where do you do that? Also, WHY?

And unless ole dude has a ton of money in his Vette, I'm gonna seriously doubt it could touch 200mph. VERY few cars can see anywhere near those speeds. If they can, you're gonna have well over $100k in them. HP goes out the window at those speeds. The car is gonna have to be engineered to run those speeds. From the simple tires to the chasis to the suspension to the motor, etc....
