The term horsepower originated with James Watt, who determined by experiment that a horse could do 33,000 foot-pounds of work a minute................ or something.

Haha, close actually. No one is completely certain, but it was believed that it was based on the weight a standard mining pony could lift through a pulley by walking a given distance in a given amount of time. He then increased it by 50% to account for a full sized horse(at least in 1 variation of the story).

But yes, 1HP = 33,000lb-ft per minute
