Oh for f&@k sakes! Again since I don't drive that exact car as you I have to bow to your wisdom?? The two transmissions work exactly the same in the Mustang and Camaro and have almost the exact same ratios. Your trying to compare your stalled auto to the OPs stock stall like they are one in the same! I drive a 9 second Mustang that would eat your car for breakfast but since your going 11s your going to tell me I know nothing??? So yea you got me...... No experience. Im done with you. What's awesome is he comes in and offer only one prospective. HIS! He has no experience with a 3.55 or 3.73 gear in an auto S197 but because he went said E/T it's the ultimate set up. That's the extent of all the experience he has. Who's to say if he had a 3.73 in the car it wouldn't have went two tenths faster??? He then goes on to post a thread of one other car out of 1000s of modded S197s as his proof that his opinion is the only one that matters. The car he posts doesn't even have the same gearing as his car. It has a faster E/T than him and also has higher gearing than his car. See where I'm going there? And in closing, the OP is near stock and still riding on the stock torque converter. Not a high stalled automatic but since I don't personally own a V8 S197 I can only assume there is absolutely no difference between a car with a stock stall torque converter and some aftermarket converter with a 3500 to 4000 stall......Because I have no experience I have to assume these things!

I switched from 3.15's to 3.73's and all it did was slow the car down with a shift into 4th before the stripe. Switched back and my times improved again. So yes I have experience here while others don't even own one of these cars but think they know what they're talking about.

Consider these first gear ratios:
C4 - 2.46
4R70W - 2.84
6R80 - 4.17
Take the 4.17 and multiply it by the 3.31, you get 13.8 for an overall gear ratio in 1st. Now take that 13.8 and divide it by the first gear ratios of the other transmissions and this tells you what axle ratio would give you the equivalent with those transmissions:
C4 - 5.61
4R70W - 4.86
So, although 3.31 "sounds like" not much gear, you can see that in the end, it is quite a bit of gear with the 6R80.
We can do the same with the second gear ratios:
6R80 - 2.34
C4 - 1.46
4R70W - 1.55
That puts the 6R80/3.31 at 7.75, which is like a 4R70W with a 5.00 axle, or a C4 with a 5.31 axle.
And finally 3rd gear, where the 6R80 is 1.52*3.31=5.03, the others are 1 to 1, so 5.03 would be the equivalent axle there.
You'd all agree that an axle in the 5.00 range is a lot of gear, well, we're doing exactly the same thing with the 3.31/6R80, we just have 3 more gears to go after that.
Going the other way, a 4.10/6R80 in first gear is like having a C4 with a 6.95 gear, or a 4R70W with a 6.02 gear.

Not at all. But when I switched to the converter I dropped .4-.5 tenths.
Gears didn't help my 60' and hasn't helped anyone's else either. But a converter did. I prefer to cross at the peak of my power band rather shifting out of it which more gear will do. Here's a quick reference we put together on S197 regarding the gearing in these autos.
Consider these first gear ratios:
