Default 2.3L misfire/backfire problem

ok my 88 2.3l misses, i go in 2nd gear (manual tranny) run bout 2000rpm, and i romp on the gas my tach shoots up to bout 4000 but my car just misses and backfires all to hell. very aggravating problem to have, ne one know what it could be for some reason seems like the backfire is some how connected to the tach. i got no clue, if ne one does please post.

you fix the O2 sensor yet? that probably has something to do with it too, that and engines generally sound really wierd with basically no exhaust, you ever hear a carbed V8 with open headers? they backfire a lot if you jolt the throttle like that

your distributor or coil or plug wires could be shot too, that would explain the tach thing...

Take care of the obvious your O2 sensor. Then move on to a tune up and so on.

And for god sakes stop ROMPING on it while its not performing to its fullest. Are you asking for more problems?Driving them harder when messed up only leads to more problems.

ok guys thx for your replys, umm i aint had ne time to go buy some drill bits to drill into my header yet, hopefully tomorrow, ok as for the tach, the distributor seems like most obvisous maybe? idk wires, my plug wires have maybe 10k miles, whats a distributor/coil cost? kinda on budget right now. i did buy new O2 sensor and hooked that up and strapped it up, after all this i put my old one back on and strapped up and it aint doing it, but my tach is still fluctuating, , fluxes a diff of maybe 300rpms, this is at steady constant speed, when i accel, slow fast, my tach "lags". distributer still? thx

Rangerfredbob
i hang around a local dirt tracks where alot of modifieds race , i love v8's wit open header WWOOO ya baby. as for your comment, unless u mean backfire and stuff on stock street vehicles, i don't hear modifieds do that unless they got engine problems. but then again modifieds run alcohol and jet their carbs. idk thought i would mention this nonsense that aint needed for shiz and giggles.

I might just be thinking of when my friend with a built 350 just installed his headers and didn't have any exhaust to go behind it, fired it up in the garage and it was friggin loud, backfired when he let off the gas

distributor probably cost what a new O2 sensor costs...

ok needs more help, some one said my tach went to my altenator, so i had my alt checked out and its good. i replaced my cap and rotor on my distributer, cleared up alot of the runnin rich problem, but still has this problem when its under load, tends to chug and backfires pretty good. ne suggestions, cars outa commision for now, lower ball joint popped out. nething that i might be able to test wit out driving maybe? idk[:@]

one more thing, finally got my O2 sensor tapped into my header, that was wensday, did cap and rotor tuesday.
