it may be stuck open?
if it were stuck closed you'd be pegging your gauge and the knock sensor would be pulling timing like a mad dog, been there
also your gauge may be inaccurate, never hurts to throw an autometer in there, i've never had a factory ford gauge work right

Autometer gauges are just like the factory gauges. You get accurate ones, and you get terrible ones.
