Changing diff gears - 4.10 or 3.73?
Hi guys.
This will undoubtably be the first of many stupid questions, but here goes... Just got myself a stock low milage US spec '97 3.8L convertible, living out in the middle east. It's a great cruise mobile, but of course a bit lacking in sound/power/traction!
After lurking for a while at the old posts, it seems acceleration wise changing the diff is a good start [plus underdrive pully/dual exhaust/chip]. As I'm visiting the states briefly, I wanted to order some stuff to bring back for local installation. Before I start getting the credit card out ...
What's the difference/advantages/disadvantages between
- the 4.10 vs 3.73 gears?
- Ford vs say Auburn limited slip diff?
and do I also need to get a "Rear End Master Installation Kit"?
cheers

General rule of thumb if its an auto go with 4.10, if its a manual go with 3.73. Although if you do a lot of highway driving I would stick with 3.73, thats what i have and i am very happy. You dont need an auburn differential unless your planning on making some serious power. The Ford one is fine. I suggest getting a bigger throttlebody and cold air intake if your going to do the exhaust.

You've got an early sn95 (94-98) don't go with 4.10s, they're too drastic of a jump for the amount of hp you have. In other words, the engine isn't powerful enough to take the jolt of 4.10s and as a result some pretty weird things have happened. Go with 3.73s. There have been a lot of sn95s on here that had 4.10s put on, and just about every one of them had some type of problem, while the sn95 edge guys (99-04) had little to no problems with 4.10s. Remeber, stock you have 2.73 gears, while the 99-04s have 3.24 gears, which equals out to be the same type of jump from 2.73 to 3.73 and 3.24 to 4.10.

3.73=not worth it
4.10=worth it.

dont get a throttle body, they really dont do anything. id stick with some 4:10's, the CAI, UD pulleys, and exhaust. then youll be set!
ohh and then get a tuner and tune that stang up juss tha way you want it.

What is the sense of a cold air intake if it is still sucking the same amount of air through the stock throttlebody. A bigger throttle body will give you more power than a cold air intake alone. If your just using it to cruise dont even waste your money on bolt ons and save for a faster car aka V8, it will give you the sound and power and comes with traction lok stock.

maybe because im right but i was referring to the new edges, if you have a new edge, dont waste money with a 3.73, manual or auto. however, i didnt see that he had a sn95 so my bad.
