Default How often should I replace the serpentine belt?

I have a 2001 that I bought new, but it has very low miles (21k). I've never replaced the serpentine belt, but heard the normal life expectancy is about 5 years. I just wanted to make sure I should replace this soon, or is it unneccesary with the low miles? The inside ribs look fine, the outside is a little shiny though. Thanks.

my 98 had 63k on it when I bought it last december, and I had to replace the belts. I still need to replace my radiator hoses (they look, fine, but the guy told me I needed to, maybe he just wanted to make an extra buck). I replaced it with a Goodyear Gatorback belt, much quieter than the other one, and it still looks brand new 6k miles later.
