My friend has a 98 v6 and when he shifts into gears he says he hears a metal on metal noise. Does that mean that the clutch needs to be replaced real soon?

To me it sounds as if the synchros might be bad... i don't know if you know what synchros are, but basically they all the collar and gear to get up to the same speed, so that when the teeth engage, they don't grind or catch.

Before replacing anything, you could try a flush of your transmission fluid...

Most likely it's something causing the clutch problem...

it could be the sychr. i would check both--if you tear it apart to put synch in you may as well just go ahead and change the clutch. my sync went out and a week later i started hearing the metal to metal clanking. 2 days later i changed the clutch. also !! i would check to make sure the rear bushing isnt going out in the trans. if you hit a hard track and throw your trans off balance your yolk will cause the bushing to bend. eventually causing the bushing and rear seal to shoot out of your trans. i had that problem once before so i would check the yolk to make sure its not lose and rattling against the tailshaft housing
