Default breather filters bad?

I had to stick one on my passenger side cover because the hose broke off the intake. Is it better to have the hose or filter? I noticed a slight burning smell.

A breather filter should be OK for you if you're not running much power. But if you're boosted or something, you should run vacuum with a vented catch can or something, otherwise you'll get a lot of blow-by.
