Smells like gas
#2
Do the obvious first. Check ALL the fuel line, fuel rails, injectors, and their connections. It might be something to do with the EGR valve or evaporative emissions canister as well.
I know this isn't under the hood, but a grommet/seal went bad that was on the connection between the filler tube and gas tank. So bad that fuel was leaking when I parked the car! Check that as well... mine's not the only one that's had that problem before, i've seen several people post about the leak at the tank. And you could smell gas within a 10 foot radius... it was that bad.

There was an explorer that came into my shop that was leaking from an injector o-ring. Whoever put the fuel rail on last didn't seat the fuel rail properly and sliced one of the o-rings. If its leaking from an injector it will be obvious to see which one. Hope this helps!
