If all you see is a metal tube, than someone who owned your car before was smart enough to take off the plastic "protective" plastic peice that originally covered the tube. Either that, or maybe they did not install them on cars not in the "rust belt".

Either way, your probably safe! The grommet is the 2nd problem, and if you replaced it, you should be good for many years.

Good luck!

Or you could take some prevention steps and POR15 your filler neck.

Well, I need to get a new one according to Brake Plus. Mine is leaking. I have a 2000 Ford Mustang Convertible Base. Just purchased it the other day...Question; do I want the one piece or the two piece and what else do I need to get? The grommet and the neck seal too? This is all new to me..there is one on ebay for $113.95 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-20...=mtr#vi-ilComp
and one on Amazon for $163.24

As I said, this is all new to me so I don't have a clue. Any advise would really be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! Beverly

So grateful for this thread. I'm on a cross country roadtrip and my mustang has been leaking gas for awhile now. We have had it on the back burner for repairs but today it had a huge backfire and the check gas cap warning popped on. Sure enough I removed the plastic cover and have 4 holes rusted through the filler neck pipe. We applied some JB weld and as soon as it sets we should be good to go back on the road! New filler neck is ordered and will be here in a few days when I get home.
