I have a 2000 also and same issue except mine keeps calculating the trip. Then smacking the odometer pin makes it come back on. Have you tried that fix yet?

Same here. It's the lights not the function that fail. Mine keeps tracking the miles as well. I'm going to try the fix in the link.
