Default Fuel Gauge Problem

Hi,

I just today bought a used 2001 Mustang V6 Convertible with 77k miles. The only problem with the car is that the fuel gauge doesn't work. The dealer didn't know the exact cause of the problem, and I tried searching but didn't really find much as far as a common cause for the problem. One thread said maybe the fuel sender could be the culprit? Is there any way to really diagnose the problem without taking it in to a mechanic?

Thanks for any help/advice.
