Shop installation incorrect? Misdiagnosis?

So I had this problem with the whole car vibrating and the shop told me the harmonic balancer slipped (which when visually inspecting I could see). So the shop replaced it with a Harmonic Balancer from Ford and the problem was WORSE. Now you can actually see the whole car shaking. So the shop told me its the balance shaft behind the HB, and would cost $1400 to fix. So for the past week I've been looking around trying to buy a new car, until I found out from some old forums that the 2000 v6 mustangs don't have a balance shaft. So did the shop install the HB wrong or something? I looked under the hood and can't make it out.

The shop probably installed the wrong balancer for your car. the 2000 V6 have two different balances. cars built prior to April 2000 are externally balanced and cars built after April 2000 are internally balanced. When was your car built, and what balancer did the shop put on there?

Thanks for the response but yes I knew about this already so I bought the balancer myself from Ford dealership and also asked in person if it was the one for the prior Externally Balanced 2000's, and the guy double checked and said yes. Then brought it to shop to install.

Just checked my door's label and just noticed the build date says 09-99. Does that mean it's actually a 1999 model?? If so I feel so blind haha...

Also came across this http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Arti...8l_engine.aspx that says the 99-00 RWD's DO have a balance shaft. So now I'm even more lost

PNYXPRESS 02-04-2011 02:34 PM

yes there is a balnce shaft, but it is up high in the block between the heads above the cam shaft.

Thanks, that was actually the same picture I was looking at on Google, but wasn't sure of the year. So since my car was built in 99 does that classify it as a 99 or 00 car? Because when it was sold to me it was labeled as a 2000.

PNYXPRESS 02-04-2011 02:53 PM

Does it have a anniversary badge or just a running pony on the fenders? The 2000 mustangs started to hit dealerships around mid-october so they started building them a few months earlier.

What did you type to find that pic on google as that is of my personal car's engine?

NewEdgeStang00 02-04-2011 02:58 PM

Oh that's right, the 99's were anniversary editions right? No it just has the normal Tri-Bar and Pony.

NewEdgeStang00 02-04-2011 04:06 PM

And I don't remember what u typed exactly, but it was something like "mustang balance shaft" and I might have included "2000"

LilRoush 02-04-2011 05:20 PM

It could have been made in late 99 and sold as a 00. My white car is that way.

I say you have the wrong har bal on there. Did the stock crank pulley have the weights on it? If so you need that crank pulley again. Somewhere I have a pic to show it, but don't have time to dig it out right now.

NewEdgeStang00 02-04-2011 05:57 PM

Yeah the stock pulley has a counterweight near the gear, I just uploaded a pic from my phone to Photobucket, i'll link it here when it pops up. But after comparing the two I think (and hoping) that you're right! And I hope ford refunds me the part..

NewEdgeStang00 02-05-2011 02:05 AM

Here's pic of my stock Harmonic Balancer. I will try to get a shot of the new one on the car, it's hard to take a picture because of how far down it is, can't see clearly behind the crank pulley.

I believe thats the counterweight (for external balanced) on the "raised" part to the right near the gears, correct? I believe the new one had this too, but now I'm second guessing myself so I'm going to try and check it out best I can tomorrow morning from the engine bay.

Good information being passed back and forth here to figure it out. A quick, interesting education for me. I hope things end up even better than what you hope. I'm interested to find out.

You have a 99-00 dampener there.

Since the link I posted went bad here is one of the 99-early 00.

Oh, I found your CL ad for $3500 :P

NewEdgeStang00 02-05-2011 02:11 PM

Thanks yeah I saw that same dampener pic when I looked at motoblue's product page. Yeah I knew it was the previous 99 to 00, called up ford today and they said they sent me the wrong one even after I explained to them the differences between early and late 2000's lol... guy didn't listen to me. Then he looked thru today and saw there was two listings for the HB so they're going to refund me.

Hopefully this fixes it so you dont have to sell the car.

I'm hoping so, it's been one hell of a winter so far... and all I wanted to do the first day of spring is take it for a nice long drive with some new wheels..

03shadow 02-05-2011 04:30 PM

yeah hopefully that fixes it. you gotta love when you try to make someones job easy and they still screw it up. might be able to do your gauges now :D

NeoTokyo 02-05-2011 07:45 PM

Yeah I hope that fixes it.
You really ought to change mechanics though if he was so blind as not to double check the part. If you look at them you will not mix them up.

Sounds like he just wanted some extra money from ya.

NeoTokyo 02-05-2011 07:53 PM

btw, see if you can get your mechanic to own up for not checking the part and to put it in for you for free.

If he doesnt take him to the BBB for miss leading you about a supposed problem with your motor.

NewEdgeStang00 02-05-2011 08:24 PM

Thanks, the reason I haven't blamed him is because he's been a family-friend mechanic to our family. But you're right he mislead me to almost fix something completely unnecessary. And that led dash light mod will be the first I do when I get the car back!
