Default 1995 Transmission Oil Pan is leaking

Hello Mustang Forums,

I've read some posts in the past regarding replacing the brakes/rotors on a '95, but I've decided to register since I have a question this time.

The transmission oil pan is leaking, and I'd like to replace it myself seeing as auto shops in California aren't cheap. I've done minor mechanic work, changed the oil/filter, replaced an alternator, done some carburetor work on a motorcycle, and of course replaced the brake pads and rotors for both axles.

More to the point, here's what I'm wondering about:
Is the transmission oil pan difficult to get at, are there any pipes or lines obstructing direct access? Also, would it be a difficult job to replace? How likely is it that I just need to replace a gasket or some seals rather than the whole pan?

Thanks for any advice and help. I'm not an experienced mechanic by any means, but I'm willing to learn by doing.

If you want to start at free: jack it up (using jack stands), crawl under it and tighten all the pan bolts to see if loose bolts are the cause of the leak. If this doesn't fix it you at least know whether you can get to the bolts easily.

If you have to change the gasket you might as well change the fluid and filter as long as you are going to drain the fluid and have the pan off. Transmission filter kits come with the new filter and a new pan gasket for less then $20.

If you think it's too much for you to do, call around and ask how much a shop will charge you for a transmission filter change. It's a common service and might not be as expensive as you are thinking.
