I never took the spark plugs out in the first place so should i still check? I also dont have a spark plug gap tool. Is it safe to take the wires off while the car is running so i can see if the wires are sparking.

Take the plugs out and change them. You dont know how many miles are on them, they could be contributing to the problem. You can get a gap tool for like 2 dollars at any auto parts store.
