Default 04 Mustang Transmission Issure..need help!

So i bought my 04 6er about two months ago and about 2weeks ago the tranny started making a weird noise when it was in reverse...like a knocking noise. so i took it in to a shop to be inspected and they said more than likley its the ball bearing and that it will last awhile but he suggested that i replace it later on...never gave me an honest answer if i could just rebuild it.... so my question is... is it possible & cheeper to just rebuild the tranny? if so anyone know how? thanks

You don't mention if it's an auto or 5 speed. but really either way the answer is maybe.

Normally a transmission can be rebuilt. But damage to the case can make them not so.

Then the question of cost. It could be cheaper to buy a used transmission vs rebuilding, or even buying a different rebuilt vs having yours rebuilt. The most expensive option is a brand new factory trans.

Another factor is whether you can do the remove and install.

If the problem really is a bearing and it seizes there is a good chance of case damage.

If you can disassemble a transmission you can replace the bearings. According to the FSM you will need a press for some of the bearings others are held in by retaining rings.

The FSM gives detailed assembly and dis-assembly instructions.
