Can I drop a 5.0L cougar engine in a 1996 mustang?

I know everyone says about emissions, but has anyone really tried to pass an older v8 engine (with full cats and everything) to newer v6 sniffer standards? I'd guess there is a decent chance it would still pass, but thats not based on anything, I just sorta feel that saying they won't pass is also not based on a whole lot.
There ISN'T a "decent" chance it will pass, IT WON'T(won't even pass visual). The new sniffer tests check EGR/CATS, and o2 sensors, and a whole lot more(even checked my gas cap, pressure test). There is no more "reseting" the battery and sneaking through, those days are LONG gone. The smog shop will know right away u reset the battery, or cleared the code with a scanner. You will need to drive the care for 20 plus miles and get it checked before they will try again. Furthermore, this swap is a bust, SOOOO not worth it. At that point, you might as well build a drag car and go carbed, but that kind of defeats the point of driving it legally.

In TEXAS, there are several ways it will fail:
It won't be OBD II compliant for running the test.
It won't match up when looking at older motor into a newer car.
It won't pass the sniffer. The V8 (even with cats) will put out more than the V6 limits. (In Texas, you have to pass limits of the motor the VIN says the car came with from the factory.)
