I only took mine out once when I dropped the whole tank to replace fuel filter.. It sticks into the tank fairly far (farther than I expected having never taken one out before). Tube was ok but gasket needed replaced and got from ford for like 30. If you're dropping the tank (or willing to go half way with it) then its a pretty straight forward procedure. Unscrew in behind the fuel fill door and also the isolation gasket youll see looking up from under the car and then unbolt by the fuel tank and it pulls out. Not too hard.

though Im pretty sure the 97 has a different tank due to being a return system. I should be close enough ...
If not, their is a video on youtube of a sn95 GT swapping a fuel pump and they show you how to drop the whole tank for that process. I think it was a BBK fuel pump if you can manage to find it. Its on a red sn95 GT.
