Default Removing a starter can’t be that hard...

I must be missing something, but I’m having a hell of a time getting access to the top starter mounting bolt & the nuts for the starter power cables on my wife’s ’98 3.8L mustang. I can’t get access from the front because the motor mount is in the way. I can’t get access from below because I can’t fit my hand & forearm up in there with enough room to turn a wrench. I finally got access by removing the passenger side exhaust header and got to the starter nuts & bolts from above. Removing the exhaust header seems a little excessive for such a common and simple job. What am I missing? How does everyone else do it? Thanks...
