Lightbulb 3.73 gear swap - any FYI's to know about?

considering our 'stang has ~146k miles on it and the rear diff will most likely go in the next 5k miles - we're considering a bump to the posi diff and 3.73 gears

obviously there's the cost in getting this done and a local shop will do the swap from open to posi plus gears for ~$900

what caveats should we look out for? any oil recommendations? also what about daily wear/tear?

the shorter gears will reduce highway mileage, but around town I'd expect the same or maybe better?

If I were you I would do a rear swap from a GT. I had 99 V6 and got a rear from 99 GT with 67K for $100. The GT rears come with a factory Limited slip. They are also stronger than the factory 7.5 that came in the V6. It would also be cheaper than buying a Posi rear for a 7.5, the last time I checked they were around $450 not including installion. If you do decide to do a rear swap it is VERY easy. All you got to do is drop your old rear and bolt up your new one, everything lines up with no modification. Lets say you pick up a rear off a GT for around $150 and the gears for $160 plus installation $300 it would be almost half of you estimated cost.

The gear swap will more than make up for the extra weight. You can get a gt rear for much cheaper than a limited slip for a 7.5 then you only have to buy gears and have them installed. You will save a few hundred and have a much better rear end.

Tlock in a 7.5" rear for $700 = money up in smoke = paperweight
