Default Any help on diagnosing a clutch problem

I just got a 2000 Ford Mustang V6 and ive been having problems with the gears, everytime i put it in reverse it grinds and i've alredy tried putting it in 5th or fourth before putting it in reverse to see if it would go away but it wont. After that somebody else told me if i can shift thorugh all the gears while the cars off there wont be a problem with the transmission and it did. But when I have the car on it wont go back into first. Can someone please tell me what steps i should take to take care.

It sounds like either there is not enough preload on the cable or the cable is stretched.

or this next one is a lot better to under stand as it has pix... Your problem ocurrs if someone has fully adjusted the clutch and taken the preload off the cable. It wont disengage the clutch enough to go into gear. And even though this is an svt it still applies to your v6

do you think i should change the clutch first or it wouldnt hurt to try to solve the preload issue you're very wise on this type of situation and your input would really help becuase i think im gunna try to solve that preload cable issue tomorrow.

Don't worry about the clutch at this point , if its having trouble going into gear there is something keeping the clutch from disengaging fully with the clutch pedal pushed.

A stretched cable , or needing more preload on the cable are the first steps to diagnosing the problem. If you cant get that sorted out youll have to look else where . Sometimes the clutch fork comes off the ball pivot and wont fucnction correctly.

Default 2000 3.8 v6 no clutch

I just bought a 2000 v6 5 speed , was told the transmission was blown and lots of tranny fluid leaked out, with the vehicle off, the transmission shifts into every gear smooth, running the car won’t go into any gear, with a pair of vise grips on the clutch cable holding it in the quadrant I tried to push the clutch and it was hard as a rock, no movement
