Default 2004 rear axle in a 1998?

Other than the gear ratio difference, is there any other difference between my stock 1998 V6 Mustang rear axle and one out of a 2004 V6? My ring gear shattered in mine (280,000 miles), and I'm getting a used 2004 rear axle for $100, just to get the car back on the road while I rebuild the original rear axle. The 2004 has ABS, but I just won't install the sensors, since there's nowhere to plug them in on my car. Any reason the '04 axle won't work?
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan Vincent

It will work but the 99/04 rearends are a little wider than the 94/98. And why not consider a 8.8 rearend out of a GT? If your swapping rearends anyway

As stated above. Or you could grab a rear end out of a fox and put your axles and brakes on it. The rear housings are identical size from 79-98. plus the later year 4 cyl cars came with 3.45 rear gears.
