Have you tried isolating the noise with a mechanic's stethoscope?

Are there a smog pump and air injectors? You may have a leak somewhere. Since this system is connected right at the exhaust ports, a small crack in an injector tube (or loose nut) can sound like a tick (also look for soot on and around the tubes).

Have you listened to the power steering pump under the scope?

Not just the gears on it, and he's talking about the synchro shaft, the sensor itself is just a magnetic pickup but take two bolts out of sensor, pop that bad boy off, if there is ANY oil or debris under it on the part still left on the motor then the shaft seals are gone/going out on the synchro shaft. When mine was starting to go out it would only squeek when cold and intermittently at that.

Do like I said, pop the sensor off the top of it, if there is any oil or flecks of stuff under the sensor in the top of the shaft then a seal has gone out.

(side note, $100 is a good price for a dealer to look at anything motor related)
