Default 2wd to 4wd conversion?

I'm looking to make my 2003 v6 into a 4wd car(while also adding other upgrades) I know it can be done and I've seen it done, I just need to know what all has to be changed, traded, or upgraded, and an estimated cost would be great. Has anyone else on here tried this before? Any insight would be great!

You would need to replace the entire drivetrain, computer and suspension components.
Best bet would be get a donor subaru or audi.

Would you have to redo the electronics as far as the computer system goes if you did the manual 4wd engagement system? And thanks for the advice on the frame switch. I'm a previously certified welder, so if I have to modify a frame a little it's no issue. Just more time.

Just a thought but you could also get a aerostar van as a donor. Those came 4wd and everything "should" be more compatible as its still a ford. Not 100% sure on the computer swap if staying with a ford engine, but if you go owith the audi or subaru drivetrain you will.

I had been thinking of something like that, trying to stick with ford if preferred, but I also wanted something with similar specs on the in the frame and such to make the least amount of mods necessary.

Best bet would be the aerostar.... Next smalled A/4WD would be a Ranger. The Fusion is way too different.

Either way, I vote insanity

Insane yes, but if done correctly, ie doesnt look like a 4x4, it could be cool. Especially if you end up making high HP numbers.

The big issue would be where to put the additional steel. Is there room behind or beside the transmission for the transfer case? How would the drive shaft be routed, and is there room for that? The entire front end would have to be re-engineered.

I'd like to see the one(s) which had been "done before," see how much of a success they were and how they did it. THOSE are the people the OP needs to talk to (then, of course, come back here and tell US).

Sounds like a cool idea. Whether it would be of value or just a clown car doesn't matter, it still sounds like a cool idea.

Cost is probably going to insane. I've heard of people "wanting" to do this, but nobody actually serious enough to do it. I think most people just go get a Subi or something if they can't stand rwd only. Here's a link to a 4wd stang, but it's an older one, so it was probably much, much easier:

Best bet I could think of would be to buy a donor frame, and do all your work on there. Get it figured out and working good, then just transfer your body over. Either way, my vote is for insane. The only value I could see is if someone was attempting to make a "bolt on" kit for this and sell them to recoup some of their money back. I'm sure quite a few people would buy a bolt on kit, but not many people want to Frankenstein their daily driver to try to figure it out. Good luck!
