Make yourself a catch can after you get it clean, I got all the stuff but the line from Lowe's. Cost me like 20 bucks.

Thought I'd share my experiences with this. My car is a 2000 w/ 107k miles and swapped out the VC baffle for the 'improved' 01+ style. I also removed my upper intake to clean it out. My lower didn't look that bad and none of the EGR ports were clogged. There was some buildup around the runners but nothing bad. The Upper plenum had most of the gunk in it, particular the front cylinders(1,2,4,5) from most to least. The 3 & 6 runners were spotless BUT had a film of oil on them. When I replaced the plugs on this car the #3 & 6 had some oil build up around the threads.

I simply cleaned the upper out with carb cleaner best I could and hit the lower a little bit. I did remove the EGR valve and neck at the front of the LIM and carefully took a brass pipe brush through the 'channel' which feeds the ports. Some carbon dust came out but I didn't 'feel' it to be blocked up. Whatever you decide to do if you intend on tackling this just MAKE SURE you keep the intake runners free of any debris. I stuffed some rags into my lower runners to prevent any carbon falling in.
