Default 2000 V6 Convertible Standard Intermittently will not start

Car will intermittently not crank over. When turning key to start position when it is acting up there is nothing that happens. After several attempts it will eventually crank over and starts quickly and runs well. Used to do this very intermittently but now is getting much worse. Is there some type of clutch safety switch, etc that I can check. I don't think it is bad connections as that has all been checked and cleaned

When this happens, put it in Neutral and see if it starts. If so then either the wiring to the Neutral Safety Switch are damaged or the switch itself is going bad. Good luck...

Neutral safety switch is on the drivers side of the transmission, just above the oil pan on the auto trans. I don’t know where it is on a manual.

My 2001 has been doing this over the years and has gotten worse. When you turn the key and hear the fuel pump clicking it will start,, then next time you don't hear fuel pump click it won't. Have checked wires to shut off switch in rear of car that has red button. Fire getting there. Can it be the fuel pump relay? My husband thinks its the fuel pump.
