Default 99-04 alternator question

My alternator wire connector is mangled so I got a junkyard alternator, but I'd rather just replace the red part than the whole thing. I don't know if it comes off though and I don't trust it not to break if I try yanking it off. So does it come off, or do I just have to replace the whole alternator?

Turns out you can remove it. I decided to ask before tinkering because fords are delicate little flowers that break anytime you touch them.

looks to me as if your original alternator shorted out and burnt off the wire, you should have it checked before you just put the red contact on. that and the wire is bare and needs replacement, its a fire waiting to happen

I think it had a bad connection that acted like a filament and heated up. So far the new part and new ring contact are doing fine but I'll keep an eye on it.

Did you replace the wire or just put a new terminal on?

Just a new terminal. I'll have to be careful replacing the wire because if the bolt on other end is too tight I could destroy the fuse box unbolting it like I did with the junkyard car.
