Shifter Cable/ Auto Trans 94 v6 help.
Okay so this is going to sound jumbled but I promise it will make sense in the end.
I have a 94 base model with an auto trans, to reclarify. My car has always been really hard to shift. I got it not too long ago and didn't pay any mind to it because I thought it was normal. So when I was putting it in park at a fast food restaurant my shifter suddenly became free. So I thought okay it's loose I can push it down. Nope. I had a mechanic say it was the shifter cable, he said nothing about anything else. He manually put my car in drive and sent me on my way. I needed my car for an emergency and I had my friend's dad readjust what I think was the shifter cable and it ended up breaking again he said because after 2 shifts (from park to drive to park) my shifter became free again.
I ended up calling my local ford and tried to order a part, but found out it was $300. SO the person I was talking to ended up telling me that my next best option was just pulling one from a yard. Which I really don't mind.
My questions are, is it really the shift cable and how was it readjusted if it broke? Is it easy to install once I get my junkyard one? And how do I pull one off? Lastly, I honestly don't know what it looks like or where it even goes. What will I need?

it sounds like the cable, the end, or the adjuster (if it has one) on the cable is most likely coming apart due to all the extra force that is required to move the binding cable. replace it like they said. just remember your car is 21 years old, and the used cable u get (after you pull it yourself) wil be 21 years old as well. i would pony up the money to get a new one IMO

I just replaced my transmission on my son's 2000 mustang and I will assume that the are similar. the adjustment all happens down by the transmission. There is a cable end that looks like a very elongated flat washer, if that makes sense. This engages a lever toward the bottom of the transmssion.. what the mechanic moved to get you in drive.
The procedure for adjustment is to move the transmission lever all the way forward and then move it three clicks back... that is drive. With the gear shifter in drive attach the cable and install the nut back tightly.
All I could see under the car with the transmission out was the cable winding its way up from the transmissoin to the top of the shift tunnel between the seats to a metallic box which must have been directly below the shifter. I would imagine you would need to take off your center console and disconnect this cable. Probably also remove the cable where it is attached to the car on top of the transmission. and replace the new one. It is not that different from a bicycle cable, mostly covered in a required protective tube with only several inches exposed near the transmission.
If the mechanic did not say it was very difficult to get you in drive, probably transmission and its linkage are OK. My son's car is old too and his cable was 100% ok. if you get one from a scrap yard, it would be pretty easy to tell it was not damaged and moved freely.
Good luck.
