01 3.8L wiring harness issues
Hello,
I hope some one can help me here. I have a 01 3.8L that the motor went out on. My son started to put another motor in and didn't finish the job. The wiring harness for the starter was missing so I went to the junk yard and bought another one. Now I am lost.
Here are my questions,
Does the harness run under the car under the front of the oil pan?
I have a 8 pin round plug by the battery that I have no clue where it goes.
I have two green plugs at the end of the harness by the starter wires with no idea where they go.
Any help would be most appreciated. Pics or a wiring diagram would be excellent.
Thanks

Start with an AllData or Mitchell subscription and print off the wiring diagrams. You will have to trace out the wiring and figure this out component by component. We can help answer specific questions - providing pictures is always helpful. You will have to find out about the engine your son purchased to install - is it the same size and from the same year? There are always subtle (and sometimes big) differences from year to year.

took some pics
Thank you for replying,
I took some pics to upload so you can see what I am talking about.
To answer some of your questions, its the same year and same size motor.
First pic is of the whole wire harness from battery to starter.
The second pic is of the plug right by the battery. There is nothing to plug it into. I wonder if I am missing another harness.
Third pic is of a plug down by the exhaust on the drivers side. (not part of the starter harness)
Forth pic is of a plug like the one by the battery but on passenger side by heater hoses. (not part of starter harness)
And the last pic is of two green plugs that are on the wiring harness up by where it connects to the starter.
So normally one can figure out where things plug into by where the harness runs in the car. Example if it runs behind the motor logic dictates where plugs get plugged into. But I have no idea where to feed this harness. Does it lay on top of motor or behind by firewall or under the motor.
Any help would really make my life a lot easier. Lol
Thank you for taking the time to try and help I am kinda lost in the sauce on this car.

That one is hooked up. I attached a pic to give a better idea of what I have.
The pic shows the end of the harness that has the neg battery cable end.
I assume the red end goes on the power distribution box. I looked under where your pic shows that plug and it is hooked up.
Tomorrow I will pull the harness out of the car and take a pic of the whole thing.

I'll look over mine tomorrow and find what I can. I've got a 2001 v6 so it'll match up the same. The pic of yours that I'm confused about is the 4th. I looked in my engine for that plug and couldn't find it anywhere. I'll look some more tomorrow.

rain delay....
Now that the flood has past here in okie land , I was able to take a few more pics.
The first one is showing the battery terminal end. The neg is hooked up to the battery. I believe the red cable hooks up to the power dist. box.
The second pic shows the middle of the harness where the neg cable would hook up to some thing like the motor block or a transmission bolt. And a green plug at the end.
The third pick shows the end of the harness where the starter hooks up. The red cable and the black cable hook up to the starter. Plus another green plug.

so..
Its been a couple of days now and no one has responded.
I managed to get a hold of my son and he was able to explain a couple of things but hard to figure out over the phone. Still do not know what the big round plug hooks up to.
