Default Steering Wheel shaking bad

I was doing my normal drive on the highway. Probably going around 75-80 mph. Then out of no where my steering wheel just starts shaking and vibrating at a high rate and was constant for about 2 minutes before I left the highway to continue my way home on the normal roads. This has never, ever happened to me. I took my hand off the wheel for a quick second and I could literally see this thing moving up and down, my arm was also moving at the up and down motion. Scared me a little. My questions are, is this a front end alignment issue, or what other issues could this possibly be. Please leave your comments and potential answers please and thanks

Tire out of balance, weight could have let loose or a belt slipped in the tire...how old are your tires?

Sounds like it threw a balancing weight off. If you look at the rim you might be able to see a "clean" area where the weight used to be.

I agree with other two, sounds like a weight was thrown. Mechanic can verify quickly, or if you're inclined you could jack up front end, spin tires and look to see if tire has any bulging on tread, or if the sidewalls have any bulges (Often called goose eggs) on them so see if bad belt. Grab the tire and shake it back an forth like your trying to turn it and do the same up and down. If there's clicking or movement there the chance of tie rod, bearing, or joint is loose. Almost 100% that's not it since it wouldn't probably would go away at lower speed, but can never be too safe. Tire balances you can generally drive through if you feel safe doing so to verify if that's it.
