Thanks for the answers. Yeah all my research shows that for a 99+ 4R70W 2800 to 3200 is usually what youll want to upgrade to. I forgot where I read it but someone claimed GM trans like the 4L60E came factory with higher stalls. And that the mid 90s 3800 camaros/trans ams had a 2600 stall stock. Dont know if thats true. But if a car like that came stock with such a stall(2600) then I dont think a 2800 is hurting mine any.

Now on to the trans cooler. I want one, but my frontend is crammed with the intercooler's plumbing for the procharger. Where can I mount it, or where would be a good place to mount it? Do I really need a trans cooler for a 2800 TC?

man if the 3800s have a 2600 stall than that explains a lot, because my buddy beat me off the line pretty badly once in his 00 firebird. it had 3.42 gears too which are better than our 3.27s but that stall also would make sense lol

my trans cooler is mounted on the top right front of the rad. do you have room there? they arent that big

Yep. I have room there. Guess Ill mount it to the rad. I kind of wanted to mount it away from the rad for better cooling.

Actually I dont have room there either. My bulky *** procharger intercooler blocks most of the radiator and takes up most the frontend space. It looks like I wont be mounting it there or even mounting a cooler at all.

Any other mounting ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ive seen guys mount coolers behind the grill.

If you had a heat extrator type hood and factory intake, you could mount it between the rad and front of the engine.

i saw someone with an oil cooler on top of their engine before lol. so i guess you can get creative on where you mount your coolers.

The most important factor is cruise rpm. If you daily drive on the freeway, what is your cruise rpm? If less than 2800, you'll be hating life.
If you don't get out on the freeway much, what rpm do you cruise at? Again, anything less than your stall and you will have a concern.

In the extreme case, a high stall will lead to premature trans failure when driven on the street due to heat. If you drive around town below stall point, you are creating lots and lots of waste heat that is killing over time. Coolers help, but the right way is to avoid cruising below stall rpm.

I decided Im going to mount it between the condenser and radiator. Which isnt so bad. But its the only place I can mount it really. No room at the front on the condenser side because of intercooler.

I do mixed highway/in city travel. My cruise rpm is around 2500. Sometimes higher or lower depending on the speed limit. But its never at 2800 when cruising. Even though my TC is rated at 2800, with the cars weight and power it probably stalls a little lower than that. Brake stall is about 2500. If I floor it from a stop, the flash stall is around 2800 which is when the car takes off and fry the tires through 1st. I think my cruise rpm is ok though but could probably be a bit higher.

I still have the stock 3.27 gears in the rear. Should I go to a lower gear ratio? I was told on the forums a few years back not to get gears with a procharger b/c they build boost with the rpms. And with gears the tranny would be shifting sooner and dropping the blower out of boost.

If I do gears I dont want anything radical like 3.73s or 4.10s. Will something in the 3.40s/3.50s be enough to restore the rip off the line and still be practical for DD use? This is my daily so I want to keep the milage and RPMs practicle. What gearing would you suggest?

What rpms are you turning when cruising? Is it that high(3500)?
