Default One dead vert and the birth of a project

Well my GF was involved in a pretty bad accident a few weeks ago. The beautiful black 2000 vert we got from Thorn (she LOVED that car) was smashed pretty bad. An 18-wheeler drifted over inther her lane on a narrow two-lane road, she took the ditch to keep from hitting him head on, overcorrected, crossed the road and broke off a light pole. Ill post pics of the car later. 2 witnesses said she just baraly missed hitting the truck.

First reaction was, "its OK we have insurance", then I found out that she, contrary to what I told her, had gotten liability. I was furious, we had agreed that she needed full covereage. But it was too late. After some very heated words we are still together, and im stuck with a smashed vert.

Well my little brain got to turning, I have a 1968 coupe (originally a 200 inline and C4) in my shop. Its a solid shell that needs a little body work, the verts unibody is beyond repair BUT the engine, trans, and miraculously the radiator, AC condensor and all survived. SO wy not a 3.8/auto 1968 coupe? Being that I have everything. I am even going to attempt to use the chassis harness from the 2000. Its possible, but the PATS will need to be removed from the PCM.

Im calling it the "Second Chance" coupe.

I'm working on expanding the shop and concreting the floor. I started with an 18x20 and will end up with a 18x28 with a 16x8 behind it for storage. Still not much space considering I'll be tearing down the vert and building the coupe at the same time.

The idea is for a cruiser. For starters ill make it work. I have found a lot of info on SN95 to classic swap for various parts. I also found a 22 gallon fuel tank for the 68 for EFI. also the rear end will swap and 2000 rims will work. As soon as the shop is done I'm going to finish disassembly and replace the floor pans and start the resembly by next year.

Hmmm, its quite doable by every means and would be interesting.

If it were me though I would prefer to build the ol 3.3, grab an aussie head, offy 4bbl intake, 570 street avenger, better cam, split headers, good dual exhaust, HEI conversion from points and a few other goodies.

I love the sound of the 3.3 and 4.1 straight sixxers.
My wives (April) 68' had the 3.3 in it with a cherry bomb and sounded pretty damn good.

There are more performance parts popping up out there for the 200/250 like aluminum heads.

The Aussie 250 cyl head is a great upgrade because you can actually change intakes! I hated that about hers because the intake was molded to the head and you only had that tiny tiny 1bbl intake.

But anyways back to what your wanting to do.

You could always go carbed and use a HEI on your 3.8L and not worry about dealing with fuel injection and wiring everything up.

Here is a clean photo of a 250 with an aluminum head and intake.

The car came with a 200 new but I bought it with nothing. It was a shell. and the 3.8 is much better on fuel than the inline.

Mmmm, Aprils 68' always got better fuel economy than my 01'.

But being that you dont have a motor with it, work with what you have.

Thats the idea. I have a wrecked vert and a solid 68 shell. Putting them together to make a decent cruiser is the idea.

Not on the car. I have been working on expanding the shop and getting the junk away from the car. Been flat broke lately, having to get her another car after the demise of the vert, and pay for the vert too. Long story.

The 68 has a solid body but must have sat in tall greass, it has some pretty bad rust in the floors. ill post pics later. I havea friend who is going to help me redo the floor pans in the 68. I am still tearing the car apart and discarding parts I cant use. Im trying to do things that cost little money at the moment. After the 68 is nothing but a shell im taking it to be sandblasted and primered and the underside rhinolined. Then I will start swapping over very parts to it. Realistically it will be spring 2013 before reconstruction begins. I need $900 to concrete the shop floor, $500 for floor pans etc, and $1,000 for sandblasting, promer, and lining. That will take all of next year to cough up. Good news too is that my house gets paid off spring 2013 so that frees up $$$ for the reconstruction.

I have been doing a lot of research, I have found a 22 gallon EFI fuel tank for the 68, as well as a company that will remove the PATS system from the 2000 PCM. I am going to atttempt to use the entire 2000 harness, rear end, front seats, brakes, etc. I also found that 2000 rinms will fot and work well on the 68.

Yeah, I was sad to hear that happen to the old vert, but it's so nice to see that you can use most of that car in the 68 so only the basic frame and outside body will go to waste. Not sure if we discussed it, but with some modification for mounting, the Sn-95 interior will go into a 1rst gen.

Rear body parts and convertible top are up for grabs if anyone needs a part let me know.

probably the only thing I will use from the interior is the seats. im going with 67 red interior. I planned to do some bodywork on the 68 and post some pics but it started raining.
