Default painting valve covers

so i stoped in at the GT threads and i see that there are several guy painting the valve cover. Has any of use V6 guys done that? I am realy thinking about doin this, but i dont know where to start.

1)how do the valve covers come off? Are there any tricks i whould know?

2)will i need to replace the gaskets?

3)Do you think i could get away with regular automotive paint or will it have to be high temp? kind of like to go with the color of the car

thanks

I haven't taken the valve covers off my Mustang, but typically the valve covers themselves are easy to remove, it's all the stuff in the way that makes it a pain. Often there are brackets for other things (A/C compressor or whatever) that are in the way. I wouldn't paint them with regular paint due to the heat under the hood. Your best bet would be to take them to a paint shop and have them powder coated. Powder coat is VERY durable and you can do whatever color you want. You'll also need to decide what sheen you want (flat, gloss, in between). You don't have to replace the gaskets if you have low mileage, but it's a good idea. Either way install a thin film of gasket sealer on each side of the gasket for some extra sealing protection.

By the way, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the sixxer covers are plastic! If they are it might be tricky to paint them.

Doesn't powder coating involve a magnetic charge to hold the colored particles until they get baked onto the surface? If so, plastic will not take the coating. Does anyone make an aftermarket cover for the V-6. Personally, I would leave well enough alone, you don't want to start undoing seals unless you really need to. Just my opinion.

thats what i though about the powder coating also. i have been unable to find covers for the 4.0.

The car is going back to the paint shop to get the chin spoiler, lower c scoops, the mirrors and posibly the trim that gose around the window paintd. That is why i want to look into that vavle covers and get them painted(if posible) I hate to look back and say i should have done that

would you be talking about this PW, "pwhit" there are afew with PW in the name LOL

thanks

No, if they are plastic you cant powdercoat them. There are higher temp powders that i'd use for valve covers if you could paint them.
