FRPP 3.73 Gears + T-LOK?
#21
I think it's more of what the conditions are than actual 'max hp', as well as if it's the stock carrier or a t-loc. The most common failure is spyder gear destruction. And the axle's are not as strong, either, as a 8.8.
With a t-loc and girdle, and somewhat slippery tires, I put 300hp through a 7.5 for over a year with no issues; but I wouldn't run slicks or drag radials with them at the track. The spin vs. complete grip reduces the amount of strain, but they could still break.
People have broken them with near-stock power levels.

Evidence? Last summer I bent the pinion on a set of 3.73 Richmond gears with Tlok, trashing the ring and pinion. I had the LPW low profile girdle on the rear end as well. This was before I added the nitrous kit, although I was running on Mickey Thompson ET Street drag radials at the track.

yeah I have always been of the opinion its better safe than sorry. However, me and i'm sure other people would rather stick with the 7.5 cause of the weight savings. Sounds pretty safe to say an 8.8 is a must if you go FI.

i agree with going 8.8 if possible. its common sense. however, i think a lot of new members are assuming that a 7.5 will not hold together at all. the actual real risk factor for the 7.5 comes at the track with racing tires, not on the streets with street tires. just basing this off the many track experiences shared here on the forums.
