Red face So, I am a little nervous about my transmission

Well theres nothing wrong with it, but today I noticed the (its automatic) 1-3 settings(?) under the drive on my transmission shifter thing. So naturally I decided to try it out, and I figured how to shift up (i kno I sound stupid bear with me) but the downshifting is what worries me, whenever I try to downshift it engin-breaks really hard sometimes. I dont know if I am shifting it at the wrong time or what, but other shift-tronic cars are idiot proof, and my manual says something along those lines but is still pretty vague. I just want to know how to reduce that engine braking when I downshift. And if I am causing any damage to my car?(only done it once or twice so far)
Thanks for putting up with my retarded question, and all your help!

First off, the OD button is 5th gear, so you may be skipping straight to 3rd. D is 4th gear. Unfortunately we can't hit neutral before down shifting which makes it even worse. I don't downshift manually much as I don't like the engine braking effect, it does create more wear and tear on the tyranny. As to the effect and how long it would make the tyranny fail, I don't know.

If I do, I just normally play by just upshifting. I've gotten stuck in 3rd gear before even after I shifted to 4th on the shifter. Had to turn off the car and it drove fine after.
