Agree replace the thermostat - mine overheated and blew head gasket OUCH
You should have replaced the thermostat, that is probably why it cracked. Mine did. I wouldn't give ford any money for parts they didn't make correctly. I bought perma-seal thermostat sealer and clamped it back together with longer bolts and a few extra clamps made from nails bend into a "C" shape. It wasn't until the gasket sealer blew out that Ford is using thermostats that destroy parts by overheating the car again. In the 90's if the thermostat went bad the car just wouldn't warm up, now they overheat and break parts. It has been 2 years since I fixed the housing.
Changed thermostat at 115K. Misfire on cylinder 5 at 117K. At this time coolant leaking into cylinder and steam from exhaust. Replaced ENGINE. A $25 THERMOSTAT is much cheaper than another engine. Found a used one and still spent about $1300 for engine and having it installed. CHANGE the LOWER housing and thermostat. Sending unit is OK but when changing the lower housing put a new lower gasket (to the block) and a new gasket to upper housing part.

All i found was these plastic housings and that is what i took off. I never would have imagined that problem arising before something wat typical. Any ideas?
