How to obtain an 8.8 Rear End
Hey guys,
I'm looking to upgrade the 7.5 to the 8.8 rear end with 3.73 gears. I'm trying to find the cheapest and most efficient way to go about doing so, but not finding too many options. I'm looking for some opinions and solutions of how to go about obtaining this. This http://www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-s...mbly-0512.html looks like one of the better solutions.
For you guys that did the upgrade, What are some of the methods you used to go about obtaining this?
Open to hearing ideas from people who obtained parts piece by piece to complete, or got it fully assembled.
Thanks,
DJ

I'm in the same boat as you. I emailed american muscle about that svt axle. In the description it only shows fitment for the GT and GT500. So I emailed them asking them if it would fit the V6 with the cobra pinion flange. No offense to am, but their response was less than helpful. Basically they told me just to call Ford Racing, which I have not done yet. My logic was that if a GT rear axle is a bolt up to the V6 with a new pinion flange, and this axle is a bolt up for the GT why wouldn't it also be for the V6?
Anyway the cheapest used GT axles I've been able to find are around $800 and that's without gears. So add in gears plus installation and you're pushing that $1300 mark, and you still have a used axle! So I was thinking about this one too as soon as I figure out it will for sure fit.

I upgraded my 7.5 with 3.73s and tlok. I bought them at Stangmods for $499. I found a good shop and they installed them for $400. I chose this route since I could'nt find an 8.8, and I'm very impatient. :-)
I also don't plan to go the forced induction route, so I shouldn't be in danger of breaking my axle.

There are a few floating around eBay right now for $500 and below.

One drag racing season on a set of drag radials was all it took to break the 7.5 - built it with Richmond 3.73's (supposedly indestructible), tlok, and the LPW girdle to strengthen it up. Bent the pinion on the indestructible and noisy Richmonds.

My 7.5 was rebuilt at 36000 miles after just breaking on its own lmao.
Not to hijack the thread but I found an 8.8 I was looking at and it said it was out of an 07 mustang and had...273 gears. That wasn't an option at all was it?? Must be a typo?
