^that's definitely true. fueleconomy.gov states my hemi should get 12 city. according to my on baord mpg calculator i get 16 although that's probably mixed. thanks for the help sp far. after going to look at the fiesta and focus i have eliminated the fiesta. surprisingly roomy for a car it's size but not roomy enough.
anyone care to share their city mpg? i just reser t my mpg computer on the ram and will try to do nothing but city driving to see what my average really is.

Oh, hai guys. This'll be a long read but I would appreciate it if you could bare with me.
Well with the recent spike in fuel prices and the fact that I DD an 05 1500 Ram with a HEMI which give mes 14 mpg city, I've decided to look into a more economical car. My dilemma is between choosing a nicely equipped Fiesta sedan and a decently equipped 3.7. Both cars would be stick but the gas millage is where things start to get muddled for me. The fiesta's city mpg is 29mpg as per fuel economy.gov and the 3.7 is 19. but I believe that doesnt take into account the 3.31 gearing, which is what i would want.
what are you 3.31 3.7 guys getting for city mpg?
the rest is a little less technical. Reason is screaming at me to get a fiesta. the 2013's (for both vehicles) are coming in and by the time im ready to buy the 2012's should be available at good prices, the only downside is that i may not be able to get exactly what i want. I went on ford.com and built both cars.
2012 Fiesta S-
5-speed manual
Upgraded stereo (CD/MPS/Radio)
Illuminated shift ****
Interior illumination package
Supplemental parking lights
Rear spoiler
Central armrest/storage console.
Sports pedals.
Comes to $15,948 sans taxes and licensing.
2012 3.7 Mustang Premium
3.31 rear end
illuminated door sills
leather and IUP (aluminum dash applique)
shaker 500 with siruisu/xm
sync
Comes to $27,707
i would get a base 3.7 but dammit if im getting a mustang I want leather. the IUP stuff i could install myself, and an aftermarket stereo is easily the route to go for sound. any idea on how expensive setting up leather in a 2010+ SI97 would be? if it's cheaper then id go for a much cheaper base 3.7
so im not sure on what to do. i thought about a 4.0 but it gets no mpg improvement over a much cheaper new edge car. hwy is actually worse. it's not worth it imo. especially since most 4.0's in decent shape are still going for $10k+ anywhere near me. for said money i could find a new edge 3.8 with <20k miles and in immaculate condition.
my final question is on the v6 performance package. in short: is it worth it. I know it comes with a better suspension set up and 3.31's. again, is it better to go completely aftermarket and save some money?

19MPG in the city is about right from my own experiences.. with a 2.73 gear at that. If you can get it out on the highway and about 60mph so it can make use of the gears, you'll see that go up quickly. In the city, or parking lot traffic under 45mph, with stop n go for lights - 19 or less, for sure.
as for PP's - I find them useless unless you are picking up a used car where the cost of the PP is quickly sliced - the cost of the PP items added is not worth the 5-7k tacked on to the car price... If you are looking for a specific PP or something (California, or some other) because you 'want' what it offers then hey, that's what you want, right? For the 5-7k difference from a base to a PP package, you can add the leather pull-out seats you want, an upgraded suspension package that 'you' decide the quality/price of (including install), a spanky looking PP steering wheel, and even bigger wheels for like 3-4k easily.
GL, Reason is a bitch - she makes so much darn sense, but seems to really kill the fun factor sometimes..
Also - add 3k to your 27k base price for that PP; I don't think you can order 2012's any more, and the 2013's are 3k more from the pricing I've seen around so far.

Well that actually sounds decent. after running some errands today with 90% city (hwy was all of 10 mins) driving, the truck has not broken 12mpg. maybe the mustang wouldn't be so bad after all. And the more I read into it the more i see that the PP is not worth it. Leather > PP. Jay you're right about that. And while Id like to wait for a 2013 im not entirely convinced it will be worth it. They will come with leather wrapped steering wheels and hill assist on sticks as standard. the wheel would be nice but I've never had a need for hill assist. Besides I could probably find a take-off wheel and add it to a '12 for a fraction of the price jump expected. But if ford adds direct injection to the 2013's then it WOULD be worth it. Which I feel wont happen till the 50th anniversary cars come out. 2014 is not only the anniversary but will be a full redesign. makes more sense to do it then.

Here is a reason to get the mustang. Get it because you want it and you like the car. My 4.0 gets excellent mpg but with the mustang you gonna pay for the style. Both vehicles are gonna be light years better than the Ram. It basically what do you want

Lets be honest...the Focus is a great little car. But really, isn't miles of smiles an important factor? I just took my 2011 v6 Mustang on a 900 mile road trip and got 30.8 mpg for the entire trip. (computer calculated). There were alot of interstate miles...about 600 or so and the rest were driving along the gulf coast of the panhandle in FL and there were a lot of small towns and stop and go traffic. I can honestly say that I think what I am driving and how it makes me feel is more important than a couple of mpg's. I vote for the Mustang all the way.

Only live once, and why let that once be in a focus?
All seriousness, in my 3.7 I do 80% highway 18% city and 2% FUN
Average for all is 28MPG, but hell, it could be 18MPG and I would still love it. I am coming from a Honda Accord that somehow averaged 34MPG on 87 octane, mustang is on 93
