Default 2006 V6 vibrates when alternator takes electrical load

Hello all,

I'm new to forum but an old mechanic at heart. My 2006 V6 runs great, but while idling, if I turn lights on or blower increase, or windows up or down, I can really feel the alternator taking the load. It vibrates the whole car for a few seconds while it works hard. Is this normal for this year Mustang? Any past issues with alternators?

Thanks all!

The alternators in these cars don't have the best quality/longevity reputation, but I'd be checking the battery too with those symptoms. If the battery is healthy and fully charged, raising the windows, etc shouldn't cause the alternator to have to kick in hard.

Mine does the same when I initially turn the AC on... But I think that is just the motor receiving more load in general...

True, engaging the AC compressor puts a lot of drag on the engine. Just putting windows up/down shouldn't cause the alternator to act that way though.

I'm going to check voltage on battery while engine is on....I was told that voltage should be no less that 13.4 V. Then I think I will remove belt and spin alternator to be sure bearings are good. Then take it to auto parts store and have them test alternator. Sure seems like excessive drag on engine when load is put on it. Yes, I can feel A/C compressor come on and that's understandable to feel that load.

Check the belt tensioner.

The high speed radiator lugs my engine but it does not 'shake'.

It seems that your 'bucket' or battery is shot and the alternator
is having to produce all the amps for the accessory loads.

I will check my Battery. It is a two years old....Motorcraft from the dealer. Makes sense that battery not helping out with loads. Thanks all!

battery equals bucket

alternator equals pump

holes in bucket equals amperage load

pump must keep up with the amount of holes
or bucket will become empty quick
