Default Oil Pressure Relief Valve

I have a V6 2005 mustang and the oil pressure is really high and it keeps blowing the oil filter.

My guess its the oil pressure relief valve that needs replacing.

Does anybody know how I go about this and where is it located in the engine.

Thank you

It is in the oil pump on the 4.0SOHC. You will need to drop the pan and cradle to get to it. Not a fun job at all on this engine when in the car. What brand/model oil filter are you using?

was a valvoline oil filter. and the oil was valoline 10 - 30w so do i need to replace the whole oil pump?

What other reason could there be for the oil filter to be failing like that, a blockage maybe?

I've seen some pretty crappy filters in my time that would easily fall apart. I would personally only use a Motorcraft - FL-820-S. Most auto parts store stock them and the price is not bad. They are one of the highest rated filters on the market. Have you though about installing an oil pressure gauge to see what the actual oil pressure is?

At the moment the car is at the ford dealers. But I'm really having no luck with them.

What I'm going to ask them todo is to replace the filter and the oil pump, which will replace the oil pressure relief valve, correct?

Then hope for the best and ask them to start the car.

Can you think of anything else that could be wrong at present all that has happened is that 2 filters have blown. All the rest are assumptions.

They also mentioned that the oil pressure is 15psi which must be incorrect or after the actual filter has blown.

Any ideas.

10-15psi at idle would be about right. Basically you should see about 10psi for every 1000rpm. I would be looking at the filter as the problem. But without test the oil pressure at higher rpm it is difficult to tell.

Thanks, ill check to pressure at a high RPM.but yeah the pressure must be really high for the filter to go. Tried it twice now both with motorcraft filters and they've both blown. So unless the pressure dramatically increase at 2000rpm in not sure what is going on

I've been asked a question by a mechanic, do you know whether to replace the oil pump, the engine has to be lifted and then the pan dropped, or it can be done simply by dropping the pan and leaving the engine where it is

thank you

We had a vehicle come into our shop, the customer complaining of the same thing. The customer had replace 2 prior filters but oil kept blowing out the seal where it fit the block. He finally brought it to us.

We checked everything we knew, and finally found that the customer upon one of his oil changes left the gasket of one of his changes glued onto the block. It came off the filter and he didn't see it. It sort of welded itself to the block, becoming like a part of the block. Once the mechanic had the extra gasket removed, the seal became solid again and the filter then would quit blowing out oil upon start up and engine reving.

Just a thought from past experiences. I would hope it is something simple like this and not a stuck valve, holding pressure high.

Use the 5W-30 as recommended in the
owners manual and as specified on the top of the oil cap...
Start there and use a quality oil filter.
Not a Valvoline brand.
And make sure the old gasket is removed
from the filter mounting boss before installing
the new filter...

The steering rack and associated cooling lines must be
removed out of the way and then the pan can be
unbolted and removed with the engine in the car on a lift..
