Buying a used Mustang

I've never heard of an intake manifold breaking on the 4.0. The plastic thermostat housing is the problem - so look for coolant under the intake manifold or evidence of a leak around the thermostat housing (it usually splits on the back side). Very common for that to break.

Go with the 3.7L! I was a hell of a lot happier with my 3.7 compared to the 4.0. Not to mention, as soon as my 4.0 went over 100k it seemed to have a lot of problems. Not mechanically, more with cosmetics.
Also, 3.7 has more power and better gas mileage. It's almost a no brainer to go with the 3.7.

He's going to buy my oldest son's 2006 v6 mustang.

You must be thinking of the 3.8L new edge v6 engine which is completely different than the 3.7L DOHC S197 v6. Going from a new edge v6 to a S197 4.0 isn't that much difference in power or gas mileage. Sure, it's a step up. Barely.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think ford has offered a 3.7 v6 mustang until 2011.

OP, you asked about leaks, look behind the carpet on the passengers side especially after it rains and see if it is damp. You can also do a search on water leak to get an idea of where to look. As far as which car to purchase is really a personal preference.
