Again with the excellent advice! I hadn't considered the cost comparison. So, an 8.8 has limited slip already and is a direct fit swap out?

Is the 8.8 what's in the GT by default?

What would be the best year to hunt for?

Yeah, the interior currently looks like it's never been sat in - that clean.

I really appreciate all thus feedback, I think it will help with the whole process to have all of these thoughts now, rather than after the fact.

The 8.8 was used in all GT's from through 2010 so any of those. Then starting in 2011 all Mustangs through 2014 have the 8.8 rear end. If you get one from a 2005-10 you have to swap to the cobra flange on the pinion. If a 2011+ it should have the correct pinion flange, but you have to check. Some rear ends have the old flange for some reason. Easy swap, remove the driveshaft, and then it is just the upper and lower control arms and shocks to unbolt basically.

Okay, but just so I understand this clearly, *ALL* 8.8 rears have limited slip by default? No need to install a kit?

As far as I know all GT rears are limited slip. as far as direct replacement...kind of. Some of the 2011 plus years have the same flange as ours has. some do not, when I replaced mine it had the different flange I got one out of a 2012. Your options are as mentioned already is a cobra flange goes for about $40, an adapter about $150 or an aluminum drive shaft $550+.

Also if you get a different gear ratio your speedometer will be off.

this is where I got my rear end
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-2011-20...-/261861070838

I went and picked mine up so I didn't have to deal with shipping.

That is correct, all the 8.8 came with the Ford Tlok so limited slip by default from the factory.

Okay, so now I have two more questions. The first one is about the flange you keep mentioning - what exactly is it or would it be better to just look it up? Second one is - what about ABS? I don't have it on mine, I believe all the newer models do, what do I do to deal with them, anything?

As for the speedo being off, that's not a difficult fix with a tuner (which will be mandatory for this project) but it may mean picking up tuner + rear together to correct that potential issue!

No worry about the ABS, the tone rings won't affect your car at all.

And the flange is available here:

http://www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-p...0304cobra.html

When I had my 2006 done, I had a shop swap the flange for me. It is a little tricky to set up properly, and easy to overtorque and damage the pinion.

or you can get the aluminum driveshaft from
http://shaftmasters.com/4ullialdrfom1.html

$457.99 if you get the same flange, if you need the GT yoke add $100

We also offer a direct bolt in shaft! it is made from .120 wall tubing and uses 1350 series U-joint's (which is both larger joints and thicker wall tubing than the aforementioned shaft above) Our direct bolt on flange to the rear pinion yoke is a billet aluminum C&C'd piece that we have custom made for us instead of the normal cast flange that is commonly used. give us a call at 480-898-1957 if there is anything we can do to help with your build.
